The Matsapha Correctional Centre recently was abuzz with activity on Wednesday as stakeholders joined forces to host a luncheon for inmates housed at Unit A (Mdzimba).

The event, themed “Ngijika litje lana, Angibuyi Ejele” (I am changing my ways, I am buying heaven), was part of the department’s rehabilitation initiatives aimed at celebrating the most disciplined inmates and encouraging good behaviour from the rest.

The ceremony, attended by 183 inmates, was graced by the presence of high-ranking officials, including Manzini Regional Commissioner Norma Sibandze, who represented Commissioner General LaMakhosini Phindile Dlamini.

Also in attendance were Matsapha Correctional Officer In Charge Assistant Commissioner Jabulani Kunene, Mawelawela Officer In Charge Assistant Commissioner Mamoshoeshoe Ntsane, and Justice Mtetwa, Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Eswatini.

The event was made possible through the generosity of several stakeholders, including Bridal Heaven, Solanis, Pizza Club, Cert Waters, and Gospel Powerhouse International, led by Pastor Ntsiki Malaza.

Renowned gospel artist Phathwakahle Mabuza delivered an electrifying performance, while other entertainment included Sibhaca, Umbholoho, Zion choir, and a Jazz Duet.

The event also featured several games, including the popular Natsa-Cedza competition.

In his address, the inmates’ representative expressed gratitude to the department and sponsors for their support, pledging that they would work towards never returning to the correctional facility as inmates or offenders.

He also committed to fighting against Gender-Based Violence and Gangsterism, and requested a family day where offenders can mingle with their loved ones. His words were echoed by Unit Manager ASP Musa Tsabedze.

Assistant Commissioner Jabulani Kunene emphasized that inmates deserve a second chance in life, just like everyone else, and encouraged families to show them love and support to facilitate their rehabilitation.

He also appreciated the longest-serving inmates for exhibiting good behaviour and instilling positive values in their peers.

The event culminated in an awards ceremony, where inmates won prizes in five categories: Most Improved, Most Clean, Most Dedicated, Most Disciplined, and Most Hardworking.

The Commissioner General applauded stakeholders for their continued support towards the department’s rehabilitation programs and urged them to maintain their commitment as the year progresses.

The successful event served as a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of rehabilitation in the correctional services system.
