The Kingdom of Eswatini has marked a historic milestone with the election of Minister of Information, Communications, and Technology Savannah Maziya as Chairperson of the Global Council on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.

The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where her appointment was recognized as a exemplar to Eswatini’s growing influence in global discussions on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In a statement shared, the Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo expressed deep pride in Maziya’s achievement, emphasizing that her leadership in this prestigious position highlights Eswatini’s commitment to advancing gender inclusivity.

“This prestigious appointment is not only a personal milestone for Hon. Maziya but a historic achievement for the Kingdom of Eswatini, solidifying its position as a leader in the global advocacy for gender equality and women empowerment,” said Nxumalo.

Her new role places her at the forefront of international efforts to drive policies and initiatives that ensure equal opportunities for women across all sectors, particularly in leadership, economic development, and innovation.

Maziya’s appointment was hailed as a reflection of her long-standing dedication to gender equality and social transformation. She has consistently used her platform to advocate for the inclusion of women in key decision-making spaces, particularly in science, technology, and innovation.

Her leadership has broken barriers and inspired young women to challenge societal norms that have traditionally restricted them from entering male-dominated fields.

Eswatini’s growing presence in international policy-making has been cemented through this appointment, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable development.

According to the government, this milestone will serve as a gateway for more Eswatini citizens, particularly women, to ascend to global leadership positions.

“This achievement further opens doors for other Eswatini citizens, particularly women, to aspire for leadership positions on global platforms and make meaningful contributions to the international developmental agenda,” Nxumalo stated.

Moreover, the government has pledged its full support for Maziya as she embarks on this critical responsibility, expressing confidence in her ability to drive transformative policies.
