In a proactive move to improve visibility and enhance road safety, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has extended upgraded lighting along the MR3 highway from Elangeni towards Satellite.
The initiative aims to provide better guidance to motorists, particularly at night and during adverse weather conditions.
For years, this stretch of road has been notably dark, raising safety concerns for both motorists and pedestrians.
Recognising the importance of well-lit highways, the Ministry launched a phased lighting upgrade project starting from Ngwenya Border Post and progressing towards Malagwane.

This project is set to significantly enhance visibility and mitigate road-related hazards.
In an interview, Ministry of Public Works and Transport Communications Officer Sandziso Malinga emphasised the vital role of highway lighting in ensuring safe and efficient road use.
“Highway lights are a critical component of transportation infrastructure. They not only improve driver visibility but also help reduce the risk of accidents and facilitate smoother traffic flow,” said Malinga.
He further highlighted that the Ministry has embraced modern technology by incorporating energy-efficient LED streetlights, known for their durability and environmental benefits.

In addition, the Ministry is gradually transitioning from traditional electricity-powered streetlights, paid for through the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC), to sustainable solar-powered lighting along the MR3 stretch.
The introduction of improved lighting along the MR3 highway addresses long-standing concerns from motorists regarding poor visibility.
Many have previously expressed frustration over the dangers posed by the darkness, particularly in areas where stray animals frequently wander onto the road.
“Eswatini is a country where livestock is prevalent, even near major highways. Proper street lighting is essential in helping drivers spot animals and other potential hazards in time to prevent accidents,” Malinga explained.
With the new lighting system in place, the likelihood of collisions with animals or other road obstructions is expected to decrease significantly.

He further emphasised the importance of 24-hour accessibility and the safety of the highway is also greatly improved.
Beyond enhancing safety, the shift to solar-powered streetlights aligns with the Ministry’s goal of containing expenditure while promoting sustainability.
By reducing dependency on traditional electricity sources, the government not only cuts costs but also contributes to a greener environment.
According to Malinga, the project is being executed in phases, with the latest installations reaching Satellite in Ezulwini and Elangeni.
As work continues, more sections of the MR3 highway will benefit from the lighting upgrade, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all road users.
“This initiative underscores the Ministry’s dedication to improving Eswatini’s road infrastructure, prioritising the safety of motorists, and implementing cost-effective solutions for national development.
With these upgrades, drivers can now navigate the MR3 highway with greater confidence, knowing that visibility concerns are being effectively addressed,” Malinga added.
