The opening of a new Shoprite store in Hlatikhulu has brought another significant step in economic development and job creation for the Shiselweni region.
The mega shop was officially opened by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo and has directly created 31 new jobs for local community members, bringing the total number of Shoprite employees across its five locations in the region to approximately 500.
This expansion was hailed by the Minister who asserted that it reflects both the retailer’s growing investment in Eswatini’s economy and the government’s ongoing efforts to attract and support business growth.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Khumalo emphasized the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini’s commitment to strengthening an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
He stated that retail giants like Shoprite play a crucial role in job creation, market expansion, and community development, making their presence in the country a valuable contributor to economic empowerment.
The Minister further expressed optimism about Shoprite’s long-term vision, confirming that the retailer is eager to expand its presence in the region with more stores in the future.

Apart from employment, the new store is set to strengthen ties between large-scale retailers and local farmers, offering small-scale agricultural producers an opportunity to integrate into a formal supply chain.
Shoprite Hlatikhulu has already established partnerships with up to 55 local farmers who supply fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers to the retailer’s branches in the region.
The Minister when speaking about this initiative expressed that such not only secures a stable market for smallholder farmers but also provides them with essential guidance on seasonal crop selection and volume requirements, ensuring consistency in production and meeting consumer demand.

He stated that the inclusion of local farmers in Shoprite’s supply chain is expected to boost agricultural sustainability and rural income, providing a platform for small-scale producers to grow their businesses.
Khumalo said that farmers now have access to a guaranteed market with reliable demand, reducing the uncertainties associated with informal trading.
