The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has begun critical infrastructure projects aimed at improving road access in the Somntongo and Matsanjeni South Inkhundla, where two low-level crossings are currently under construction.
These projects, set to be completed by the end of May 2025, are expected to significantly improve transportation for local communities,
particularly in areas where poor road conditions have long posed challenges to residents, schools, and healthcare facilities.

In Somntongo Inkhundla, the Ministry is constructing the Nyaningo River Crossing while also re-gravelling the road from Etjeni to Zindwendweni.
This road is a vital link, servicing Zindwendweni Clinic, as well as Zindwendweni Primary and High School, institutions that have struggled with access issues due to the poor state of the road.
The intervention comes at a crucial time, as the existing crossings in the area are prone to submersion during heavy rains, making travel treacherous and sometimes impossible.
According to the Ministry in a statement, the re-gravelling effort will not only improve the condition of the road but also enhance the accessibility of critical services for the people of Zindwendweni.
Similarly, in Matsanjeni South Inkhundla, the Ministry is constructing the Egoli low-level crossing along the Matsanjeni kaGamedze road.
This initiative also includes spot re-gravelling along the Matsanjeni/Nkonka-Ntintini/Dinabanye-Nsalitje district road, as well as upgrading the section leading to the Stilo River with concrete paving.

For years, residents of Matsanjeni, Nkonka, Dinabanye, Ntintini, Nsalitje, and KaGamedze have endured deteriorating road conditions that made travel difficult, particularly for children attending Phumelele and Nsalitje Primary Schools.
The construction of the new crossing and road improvements are said to provide much-needed relief to these communities which will ensure that schoolchildren and other residents can move safely and efficiently.
