Eswatini is looking to the future with a bold vision—one that embraces digital transformation, empowers its youth, and builds resilience against climate change.

This was the focus of high-level discussions between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government, as both sides explored new ways to expand cooperation for sustainable growth.

During a courtesy visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Pholile Shakantu, UNDP Resident Representative Henrik Frankling reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Eswatini’s development agenda.

The talks underscored the need for innovative solutions and forward-thinking policies to tackle emerging challenges while unlocking new opportunities for the country.

With technology evolving rapidly, climate threats intensifying, and young people seeking greater economic prospects, both parties agreed that a stronger partnership could pave the way for meaningful progress.

During the meeting, Franklin commended the longstanding partnership between UNDP and the Eswatini government, emphasizing the organization’s continued support in driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He highlighted key areas where UNDP has collaborated with the government, including poverty reduction, climate resilience, good governance, and economic development.

He further assured the Minister that UNDP remains committed to providing technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and funding opportunities to accelerate the country’s development priorities.

Minister Shakantu expressed her gratitude for UNDP’s support and acknowledged the significant impact of their collaboration across various sectors.

UNDP expressed appreciation with the continued partnership with the Government of Eswatini.

She noted that Eswatini has made notable strides in its development efforts with the assistance of UNDP, particularly in enhancing inclusive economic growth, strengthening governance structures, and promoting environmental sustainability.

She emphasized the importance of continued engagement to ensure that Eswatini remains on track to meet its SDG targets.

Further, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to working closely with UNDP to achieve shared goals.

She described the partnership as productive, adding that she looked forward to continued collaboration in advancing Eswatini’s development agenda.

Franklin echoed these sentiments where he expressed optimism about deepening cooperation and enhancing joint efforts to drive meaningful change.

The United Nations Development Programme has been a pivotal partner in Eswatini’s development journey since 1971, focusing on human and sustainable development to enhance the capacities, choices, and opportunities of its people in an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable manner.

In 1977, the partnership was formalized through a standard agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini and UNDP, with Hugh Gordon Greenidge appointed as the first Resident Representative.

Over the decades, UNDP has collaborated with Eswatini on various initiatives, including poverty reduction, governance enhancement, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

The current Country Programme Document (CPD) for 2021-2025 aligns with Eswatini’s National Development Plan and Strategic Road Map, emphasizing sustainable economic growth and inclusive governance.

In 2021, UNDP supported the Commission on Human Rights in documenting and investigating human rights violations during civil unrest, contributing to accountability and citizen empowerment.
