The Ministry of Education and Training has handed over 20 science kits to 20 rural primary schools in a bid to improve science education and bridge the learning gap between urban and rural areas.

Of these, five were purchased by the ministry, while 15 were donated by MTN Eswatini and Ubombo Sugar Limited.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education and Training, Principal Secretary Bhekithemba Gama highlighted the significance of equipping students with skills relevant to the 21st century.

He described the science kits as a symbol of commitment to ensuring that all learners, regardless of their location, have access to quality education.

“They will spark curiosity, foster creativity, and instil a love for learning that will stay with our learners throughout their lives,” Gama stated.

He further proposed that the private sector partners procure 20 science kits annually over the next five years to expand the initiative to more rural schools.

MTN Eswatini CEO Wandile Mtshali revealed that the science kits acquired in partnership with Ubombo Sugar were valued at E252,000.

He emphasized that the company’s goal was to ignite curiosity and inspire young learners to develop an interest in science.

“These resources will inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators,” he said.

Ubombo Sugar’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Leonard Ndzimandze, speaking on behalf of the Managing Director, expressed the company’s long-standing partnership with the ministry.

He noted a concerning decline in the number of students pursuing science and technology fields, which prompted their involvement in the initiative.

“As a manufacturing company that relies heavily on technology, we saw the need to do something to reignite interest in science,” he said.

It was further said that the donation is expected to enhance hands-on learning for rural students and encourage them to explore careers in science and technology, ensuring a stronger pipeline of future professionals in these critical fields.
