Eswatini has taken a strong stand to deal with the perpetrators of misinformation and character assassination of the country’s leaders.
This pledge was made by the PM in response to the Senate Portfolio Committee budget debate for the 2025/2026 financial year.

He was responding to a concern that was registered by Senator Lindiwe Ngwenya who wondered what the PM’s office was doing to address the character assassination of political leaders.
“As Parliament, we would also like to see legislation that regulates social media bullying and other cybercrimes,” Ngwenya submitted.

The PM stated that it was true that misinformation and character assassination were a major cause for concern for the government.
“The PM’s office is working with the police to develop strategies to counter this phenomenon.

In the meantime, the government continues to issue statements and alerts setting the record straight and alerting the nation on false information.
Legislation is already in place to address this such as the Computer and Cybercrime Act, 2022, and Section 17 specifically addresses cyber-bullying,” said Dlamini.
