The Leading Telecommunications provider, Eswatini Mobile has upgraded 40 base stations across the Matsapha and Manzini corridor with 5G technology.

According to the Chief Technology Officer, Jabulile Dlamini, they used part of the existing LTE 1800 Band to deploy a new 5G Network in a process called Re-farming and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

“In re-farming, our existing 10MHz LTE has been repurposed to also be used for 5G and an extra 10MHz added to make it 20MHz” she said.

She further mentioned that in the second phase called DSS, the 4G will coexist and share the spectrum bandwidth with the 5G, this will be dynamically allocated between the 2 technologies based on user demand, thereby fully optimizing the spectrum.

“This is a technology first in the Kingdom, showcasing the technological advancements made by the eSwatini Mobile Technology Team”

Benefits of 5G and DSS: Blazing-Fast Speeds

The most significant advantage of 5G is its speed, which can be up to 100 times faster than 4G.

This means faster downloads, stream high-definition (HD) videos without buffering, and enjoy seamless/live online experiences with very extremely low latency.

Latency is the delay between sending and receiving data, and is important for Online Games, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and for autonomous self-driving Vehicles, where even a fraction of a second matters.

Reduced Load on LTE and enhanced Experience on both Technologies

Migrating to 5G reduces the number of Users on LTE, hence Utilization/load is also reduced, thereby improving user experience on both technologies for our customers.

Unlike 4G, 5G can support a massive number of connected devices simultaneously on your Router or Phone without affecting the experience.

So, feel free to share your Wi-Fi password or hotspot from your phone.

Empowering Businesses and Industries through Innovation & Automation

The impact of 5G extends far beyond faster downloads, streaming and internet browsing. It paves the way for future technologies and enhances our position as the leader in Artificial Intelligence (A.I).

It’s used in critical sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing and transportation.

5G is an AI enabler and is used in remote surgeries and real-time patient monitoring in the heath-care sector, improving medical services and accessibility.

In Manufacturing and Transportation, it can used to support automation, used in 5G-enabled smart Traffic management systems, autonomous vehicles, robotics and systems that need faster and efficient processing of data.

With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) where smart devices like sensors, cameras, wearables, TVs and machines require constant communication, 5G is the technology to enable them faster and efficiently.

All these improve efficiency and productivity in our daily lives and homes whilst reducing costs and improving safety in Industries.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

5G is more energy-efficient than previous generations of technology, reducing the power consumption of connected devices.

This contributes to environmental sustainability efforts and helps businesses lower their operational costs (OPEX).
