There is a new star on the rise.
This is no other marathon runner Melusi Khumalo who has made a mark in Iraq.
The Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force Athletics (UEDF) club runner finished at position five in the Al Basra International half marathon on Friday afternoon.

Khumalo won E50 000 at the inaugural event which he attended with local female star Thobile Ngwenyama from the Correctional Services Athletics Club.
Ngwenyama finished at position 14 in the female category.

Athletics Eswatini President Zakhele Dlamini congratulated the two athletes for their achievement.
“The two athletes have hoisted the country flag, and we are proud of their achievement. They have both represented the country with pride,” he said.
The race featured Athletes from Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa.

The route started at the Basra Sports City and ended along the Shatt Al-Arab Corniche.
The event is now recognised by World Athletics and has been included in the world governing body’s annual calendar.

The two athletes are now eyeing to qualify for the 2025 World Championships set to take place in July in Tokyo, Japan.
Other international assignments include the Comrades marathon, among others.
