Ministry of Natural Resources aims to boost economy through mining

In a bid to unlock the potential of the mining sector and propel Eswatini’s economic growth, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Lonkhokhela recently met with the Minerals and Mines Management Board (MMB).

The high-level discussion centred on aligning efforts with His Majesty the King’s vision of leveraging the mining industry as a key driver of job creation and national prosperity. Prince Lonkhokhela emphasized the Cabinet’s unwavering commitment to utilizing the mining sector as a catalyst for economic progress.

He highlighted the aspirations voiced by emaSwati during the recent Sibaya, the People’s Parliament where constructive public engagements were made towards stimulating economic progress for the Kingdom. The Minister emphasized on the engagements where emaSwati expressed that the mining sector has the potential for job creation and development.

Responding to the Minister’s call for collaboration, HRH Prince Guduza, Chairman of the MMB, pledged the Board’s full support to the government’s objectives. He expressed the MMB’s dedication to working closely with the Ministry to implement strategies that unlock the mining sector’s potential while adhering to responsible and sustainable practices.

The meeting underscores the shared vision of leveraging Eswatini’s mineral wealth to create a brighter future for its citizens. By harnessing the expertise of the MMB and aligning with the King’s vision, the Ministry aims to attract investment, create jobs, and diversify the economy beyond traditional sectors like agriculture and tourism.

The MMB has been in office since March 2021. It is established in terms of the Constitution of the country. The MMB consists of the Commissioner of Mines, a mining engineer, an economist, a legal practitioner, and three other persons all of whom, including the Chairperson, are appointed by His Majesty King Mswati III on the advice of the Minister responsible for minerals and mines.

The MMB is composed of the following Members:

– HRH Princess Lomajuba – Member
– Jacob Mabandla Manzini – Member
– Sihle Yvonne Mashaba – Member
– Sibusiso Samuel Ntshalintshali – Member
– Gideon Phungu Gumedze – Member
– Robert Mendo Biyela – Member and Board Secretary
