‘Use proper channels, avoid protests’ – Govt spokesperson

By Nokunceda Magagula

Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo has outlined the importance of using the correct channels to address grievances among emaSwati, urging citizens to seek redress through appropriate platforms.

In an interview with UNESWA radio, Nxumalo highlighted the inevitability of grievances in society but stressed the significance of adhering to established channels for resolution.

He underscored the Swati value of respect, stating that it extends to respecting the structures and institutions within society, from the grassroots level to national governance.

“Emaswati are known for one common thing, which is a value or principle called respect. This entails respecting the structures and institutions we are in, from the community, households, family, church, to the national level,” Nxumalo said.

Expanding on the national level, Nxumalo pointed out the availability of various ministries where individuals can articulate their grievances and seek redress.

Ministries such as Health, Finance, and Public Service were cited as examples, each equipped with designated personnel authorized to handle complaints and provide updates on their resolution progress.

“It’s not always necessary to resort to shouting and striking; shouting is not communication but noise. We urge emaSwati to employ the politest means possible to find solutions for emerging problems,” emphasized Nxumalo.

While acknowledging the legality of strikes under Eswatini laws, Nxumalo discouraged the immediate recourse to such measures, advocating instead for effective communication devoid of disruptive protests.

Nxumalo further lamented that emaSwati have lost the core value of addressing grievances directly to the party with the answers.

He advised the public to escalate matters to the relevant authorities, from ministries to the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, until the top.

Nxumalo also cautioned against the indiscriminate use of protests, citing the potential for communication breakdowns, and highlighting the lack of wisdom and psychological capacity among some individuals to handle such actions responsibly.

“Communication can be made strong and resolute without mobilizing marches or protests. Emaswati should employ different forms of communication, including non-verbal methods,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, Nxumalo stressed the importance of fostering a culture of dialogue and cooperation between citizens and authorities, wherein grievances are seen as opportunities for constructive engagement rather than sources of conflict.

Nxumalo reiterated the central message of utilizing the appropriate channels and platforms to address grievances effectively.

He urged emaSwati to uphold the principles of respect, dialogue, and cooperation in seeking redress for their concerns, emphasizing that a harmonious society is built on the foundation of mutual understanding and collaboration.
