Film lovers in Eswatini have reason to celebrate as the highly acclaimed film ‘BakaNgwane’ is poised to make its mark at the upcoming European Union Film Festival.
This much-anticipated event will return to Eswatini from October 23 to 26, 2024, promising an exciting showcase of cinematic talent.
Scheduled for screening on October 26, 2024, at 1:45pm, ‘BakaNgwane’ runs for an engaging 1 hour and 42 minutes.
Under the visionary leadership of Senator Pholile Shakantu, who serves as the film’s Executive Producer, the production has garnered significant acclaim.
The film is produced by the talented Sibusiso Dlamini, with the creative direction of the renowned director Shaft Moropane.

‘BakaNgwane’ is a poignant period drama that delves into themes of love, honour, and the quest for belonging, inspired by true events from Eswatini’s rich history.
It follows the extraordinary journey of King Matalatala as he navigates the daunting challenge of leading his people across the Zambezi River while responding to the aspirations of his daughter, iNkhosatana, who desires to carve her path as a leader.
The exciting announcement of ‘BakaNgwane’s screening was made by Karyn Groening, Cultural Coordinator at Alliance Française de Mbabane.
She emphasized that this year’s festival promises to be more exhilarating than ever. In partnership with the Alliance Française de Mbabane, the European Union in Eswatini proudly presents the third edition of this celebrated festival, supported by various EU Member States’ Embassies and Cultural Institutes in the region.
The festival’s compelling theme of “Inclusivity, Diversity, and Human Rights” aims to celebrate cinema while highlighting stories that resonate with universal human experiences.

EU Ambassador-designate Karsten Mecklenburg expressed his enthusiasm for the festival, stating, “Motion pictures and cinema are central to our European cultural heritage.
As in previous years, I am thrilled that the European Union Film Festival will take place in Eswatini again this year to inspire all of us and evoke our shared human emotions.”
He also highlighted the festival’s commitment to empowering local creative industries through an audiovisual workshop aimed at fostering innovation, job creation, and positive change among emaSwati youth.
