Food will no longer be a problem for emaSwati after the King disclosed a new development concerning the new location of FAO.

Towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), His Majesty King Mswati III has unveiled plans for the establishment of new offices for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Eswatini.

He announced during a media briefing which was held at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence following his recent diplomatic trip, which traversed Italy, Serbia, and Samoa.

The meeting with the FAO Secretary General, a key moment during the trip, focused on crucial discussions surrounding global food security challenges.

His Majesty emphasized the importance of creating a localized presence for the FAO in Eswatini, stating, “It was during this meeting that it was agreed that the organization that deals with food globally be offered a portion of land through the Khonta System.”

The Khonta System, a traditional land allocation method that integrates cultural values with modern developmental needs, will facilitate the FAO’s operations in the kingdom.

His Majesty noted that establishing the organization’s office within the country will play an essential role in enhancing efforts to combat food insecurity, a pressing issue that affects many communities across Eswatini.

“This new development will ensure that our efforts to address food security in the country are achieved,” he affirmed.

“Moreover, having the FAO’s expertise and resources on our soil will create job opportunities for Emaswati, thus contributing to the economic empowerment of our people.”

The decision to bring the FAO closer to the heart of Eswatini’s agricultural landscape aligns with His Majesty’s dedication to sustainable development.

The FAO is renowned for its instrumental role in providing global leadership and expertise in food security, agricultural development, and nutrition.

Having its offices in Eswatini is expected to foster increased collaboration and enhance the capacity of local farmers and agricultural stakeholders.
