In a recently released performance report, the Ministry of Defence and National Security has highlighted significant achievements in combating drug trafficking, livestock rustling, and vehicle smuggling during the second quarter of the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

The report outlines a series of operations that have enhanced national security and crack down on illicit activities that threaten the safety and well-being of citizens.

A noteworthy accomplishment involves the interception of a staggering 6,186.94 kg of dagga, with an estimated street value of E6,186,940.

The operation, which spanned various areas under the ministry’s jurisdiction, saw the contraband handed over to multiple police stations, furthering collaborative efforts in the fight against drug-related crimes.

Additionally, several suspects were apprehended, while some evaded capture by abandoning their consignments and fleeing the scene.

“Our operations included extensive foot and Vehicle Check Point (VCP) patrols,” the report highlighted. “We have successfully intercepted illegal immigrants attempting to carry cannabis across borders, demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding national interests.”

The report also shed light on the alarming issue of livestock rustling, a crime that affects both the economy and community livelihoods.

In total, 196 goats valued at E197,700 were recovered, alongside 59 cattle worth E506,000, which were intercepted while being illicitly moved from the country to neighboring nations.

These efforts highlight the ministry’s relentless drive to protect the nation’s agricultural resources and support local farmers.

In addition to these successful initiatives, the ministry also reported the control of vehicles involved in smuggling operations, with an estimated value of E2,310,000.

These operations were vital for curbing illegal vehicle trafficking and safeguarding the country’s borders from criminal activities.

The ministry’s continuous focus on enhancing operational capabilities and intelligence gathering has proven essential in dealing with these threats.
