The recent political turmoil in Mozambique following the elections has drawn grave concern from neighboring Eswatini, with government officials calling for immediate resolution to the escalating tensions.

In a statement made by Government Spokesperson Alpheaus Nxumalo, the Kingdom expressed its deep apprehension over the potential ramifications of ongoing unrest in Mozambique, emphasizing the need for amicable solutions.

Nxumalo articulated the seriousness of the situation, likening the current climate to the devastating civil war of the 1980s that had caused significant disruption and led to an influx of Mozambican refugees into Eswatini.

“There’s no doubt absolutely that the post-elections political developments in the Republic of Mozambique are very disturbing and of grave concern not only to the Kingdom of Eswatini but also to the entire SADC family,” he stated.

The spokesperson’s remarks highlight the potential for further conflict amidst a backdrop of significant existing challenges, including the Cabo Delgado terror conflict, which has already uprooted thousands and strained regional stability.

Nxumalo reiterated that “Mozambique cannot afford another raging conflict that will further harm and derail development initiatives.”

Recognizing the rich potential of Mozambique as a country, the Eswatini government expressed hope that its neighbor can navigate the volatile situation effectively, stressing the importance of restoring peace for the benefit of all its citizens.

“The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini prays for the Republic of Mozambique and stands in solidarity with both the people and leadership of the Republic in support of a speedy and permanent solution to the causes of the present tensions,” Nxumalo said.

As the situation develops, the Kingdom of Eswatini calls for unity and cooperation among Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations to foster stability in the region.

Analysts are watching closely, noting that the implications of Mozambique’s political crisis extend far beyond its borders, potentially affecting the socio-economic landscape of neighboring countries.

The international community is urged to lend support, as Mozambique seeks to navigate a path towards peace and reconciliation in these challenging times.
