Seven men have been arrested in connection with the possession of dagga valued at an estimated E0.6 million.

The arrests took place in the early hours of Thursday morning at a residence in Siphambanweni, following a tip-off received by Lavumisa Police.

According to Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, the police acted swiftly after gathering intelligence about the illegal possession of the narcotic drug.

At approximately 5 am, officers arrived at the location and discovered 157 kilograms of dagga stashed within the premises.

The arrested individuals include 36, 24, 22, and 22-year-old men respectively, all from Siphambanweni, a 22-year-old man from Nsalitje, and a 34-year-old man from Hosea with a 35-year-old man from Phongolo.

The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact source of the narcotics and are working to uncover any potential networks involved in the distribution of dagga within the region.

“This operation underscores our commitment to combating drug-related offences and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities,” said Senior Superintendent Vilakati.

“We will not relent in our efforts to bring to justice those who engage in the illegal drug trade.”

The accused individuals are expected to face charges related to drug possession under the Pharmacy Act, and they will appear in court in due course.

The REPS are encouraging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities as part of ongoing efforts to address drug-related issues in the area.

It should be noted that as the REPS continues to ramp up measures against drug trafficking, this incident serves as a warning to those involved in such illegal activities that the long arm of the law will not hesitate to act.
