Over 2,000 jobs created amid accelerated development efforts

by Ncaba Ntshakala

The government of Eswatini has created at least 2,095 jobs from new and expansion investments over the past year, which Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has described as significant strides towards economic development and social transformation.

Dlamini revealed these accomplishments while presenting a high-level summary of government achievements, a report he said encapsulated the progress made in addressing the concerns of emaSwati as raised during the Sibaya People’s Parliament.

He emphasized that the government’s efforts were rooted in the Directive Principles of State Policy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Eswatini while remaining steadfastly aligned with the vision of His Majesty King Mswati III to accelerate national development.

Among the notable achievements highlighted in the report, the government highlighted the creation of 800 direct jobs through the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE).

These positions stem from various initiatives, including constructing the Mpakeni Dam, which is poised to generate additional employment opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.

The infrastructure investments continue with the completion of two community factory shells in Hlathikhulu and Gamula, with two more under construction in Ndzevane and Nhlangano.

These projects will enhance industrial growth and stimulate local economies, particularly in rural areas.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the establishment of the Citizens Economic Empowerment Council, a pivotal step in operationalizing the Citizens Economic Empowerment Act of 2023.

This council is expected to serve as a cornerstone in advancing economic inclusivity, ensuring that emaSwati actively participate in the national economy while benefiting from the wealth generated by various investments.

The Premier shared major achievements done by government.

Dlamini’s address emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the aspirations articulated during Sibaya, where citizens voiced their concerns and presented their visions for the country’s future.

The report was said to view the directive given by His Majesty King Mswati III during the opening of the 12th Parliament, where he called for accelerated efforts, described as “Nkwe,” to propel Eswatini toward its goal of becoming a developed country.

According to the Prime Minister, the government has successfully translated these aspirations into a policy statement and a comprehensive programme of action.

He urged all emaSwati to rally behind this programme, which directly addresses key issues such as unemployment, poverty, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

“It is, therefore, imperative for all emaSwati to rally behind this programme of action as it directly addresses the issues raised at Sibaya,” Dlamini said.

Moreover, Dlamini commended the private sector for its proactive role in supporting the government’s development agenda through transformative investments.

These contributions, he noted, are integral to the “Grand Plan” for economic revitalization, as they promise to catalyze sustainable growth and enhance the quality of life for citizens.

Similarly, he praised parastatals for aligning their strategies with the grand plan, noting that their investments further embody the “Nkwe” spirit of urgency and excellence.

The Prime Minister expressed optimism that such synergy between the government, private sector, and parastatals would create a ripple effect of progress across the nation.

In his address, Dlamini made emphasis on the government’s dedication to adhering to constitutional principles while fulfilling its mandate.

“In providing this update, we also comply with the Directive Principles of State Policy as enshrined in the constitution of the Kingdom of Eswatini,” he stated.

He emphasized that the government’s efforts to stimulate economic growth and achieve sustainable development are intricately linked to addressing pervasive societal issues.
