Eswatini nationals absent from Stilfontein illegal mining incident

Recent reports from Stilfontein, South Africa, have highlighted a tragic situation involving illegal miners, with authorities extracting 36 corpses and arresting 82 survivors from an abandoned gold mine.

Notably, none of the individuals involved were identified as Eswatini nationals.

The absence of emaSwati in such unlawful activities abroad highlights Eswatini’s relative economic stability.

While neighbouring countries grapple with high unemployment rates and economic hardships that often drive individuals to partake in illegal mining, Eswatini has managed to maintain a more stable economic environment.

Government Spokesperson Alpheus Nxumalo cited the absence of emaSwati from such illegal activities as positive development and outcom.

“It’s a positive development and outcome so far. Emaswati are always implored by His Majesty the King and INDLOVUKAZI whenever and wherever they undertake State’s and international visits, to behave and upholds the spirit of respect, honor, peace and BUNTFU,” Nxumalo said.

“These does not only reflect positively to that admonition by their Majesties but it also enhances

opportunities for emaSwati to be considered and given first preference as law-abiding people.”

According to North West community safety and transport management MEC Wessels Morweng, of the 1,259 illegal miners who have resurfaced since August 18, 2024, the majority were from. The absence of Eswatini nationals in these statistics is telling.

Rescued miners are seen as they are processed by police after being rescued at the mine shaft where rescue operations are ongoing.

Eswatini’s government has implemented various policies aimed at economic growth and job creation, which have contributed to a lower inclination among its citizens to seek risky employment opportunities abroad.

The country’s focus on education, infrastructure development, and foreign investment has provided more secure and legal avenues for employment within its borders.

Moreover, the strong cultural and social fabric of Eswatini plays a role in deterring its citizens from engaging in illegal activities.

Community cohesion and adherence to the rule of law are deeply ingrained values that discourage participation in unlawful endeavors, both domestically and internationally.

While no nation is immune to economic challenges, Eswatini’s proactive measures have strengthened an environment where its citizens are less compelled to seek dangerous and illegal work outside.

In conclusion, the absence of emaSwati in the Stilfontein illegal mining incident is a positive indicator of Eswatini’s economic health and the effectiveness of its policies in ensuring the well-being and lawful conduct of its citizens.
