The Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, in collaboration with key stakeholders, recently convened a crucial Social Protection Cluster meeting at SibaneSami Hotel in Ezulwini to address pressing humanitarian concerns within the Malindza Refugee Reception Centre.

The meeting brought together a range of experts and decision-makers to develop a comprehensive cluster plan aimed at enhancing the well-being of refugees and host communities.

In a shared statement from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, discussions focused on various critical areas, including strategies to improve social safety nets, ensuring access to quality healthcare services, and tackling the persistent challenge of gender-based violence (GBV) within the camp.

Emphasis was placed on understanding the triggers of GBV and sexual reproductive health challenges, with the goal of implementing effective prevention and response mechanisms that safeguard the rights and dignity of vulnerable groups.

In addition to social and health concerns, the meeting reviewed the multi-hazard contingency plan, which is essential in strengthening emergency response capabilities for potential natural disasters and other crises.

The meeting aimed at addressing humanitarian issues at the Reception Centre.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s Office provided insights into the progress made in advancing social protection initiatives and highlighted ongoing efforts to reinforce the delivery of essential services to those in need.

Stakeholders also conducted vulnerability assessments and safety audits to identify the specific needs of various at-risk groups within the camp.

Community mapping exercises were discussed as a key component in tailoring interventions to ensure they address the realities faced by refugees and surrounding communities.

Again, a gender-sensitive approach was a focal point throughout the meeting, with stakeholders reaffirming their dedication to aligning all interventions with the principles outlined in the Gender in Humanitarian Action Handbook.

This approach aims to ensure that response efforts are inclusive and considerate of the unique challenges faced by women, children, and marginalized groups.
