The E28 million Sigwe Shoe Manufacturing Factory is nearing completion, with the project expected to be finalised by the end of October 2026.
This project has been hailed as Government’s efforts to accelerate industrialisation, create employment and strengthen Eswatini’s manufacturing sector.
The factory, located in the Shiselweni Region, is being developed by the Ministry for Commerce, Industry and Trade as part of its broader strategy to promote local manufacturing, attract investment and diversify the country’s economy. 
Once operational, the facility is expected to manufacture footwear locally, creating sustainable employment opportunities while reducing reliance on imported products.
Construction of the project commenced in November 2025 and has made significant progress over the past several months.
The works are being carried out by Smart Group Construction, which has already created employment for 45 emaSwati during the construction phase.
The project has also provided opportunities for local suppliers and service providers, contributing to economic activity within the region.
A major breakthrough has been the successful identification of an investor who will operate the factory upon its completion.
This development is expected to ensure that the facility begins production soon after construction is completed, allowing the country to realise the economic benefits of the investment without unnecessary delays.
During a recent site visit to inspect progress on the project, Minister for Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo said the factory represented Government’s commitment to creating an environment that supports industrial growth and private sector investment.
“This project demonstrates Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment and industrial development.
The Sigwe Shoe Manufacturing Factory is an investment in jobs, skills development and the economic future of emaSwati,” said Khumalo.
The minister said the project extended beyond the construction of a modern industrial facility, describing it as an investment that would empower citizens through employment, skills transfer and increased participation in the manufacturing sector.
He noted that industrialisation remained one of Government’s priorities in driving sustainable economic development and improving livelihoods.
Once operational, the factory is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s manufacturing output by producing footwear locally and promoting value addition.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen domestic supply chains while creating opportunities for small businesses that will supply raw materials, transport services and other operational requirements.
The project is anticipated to bring long-term economic benefits to the Shiselweni Region through the creation of direct and indirect jobs.
It is also expected to enhance technical skills among employees through specialised training in footwear manufacturing, improving the country’s industrial capacity over time.
