MTN Eswatini bags three nominations for global IIP awards

MTN Eswatini has been shortlisted for three awards in the prestigious Investors in People (IIP) Awards 2019. The three categories MTN Eswatini was shortlisted in were; Employer of the Year: Platinum (under organizations that have 50 to 249 people), The Reward and Recognition Award and The Social Responsibility Award.

A panel of experienced judges will be reviewing the shortlisted entries to determine who will be taking the trophies on the 19th of November in the United Kingdom (UK). MTN Eswatini, a subsidiary of the MTN Group, is the Kingdom’s leading mobile telecommunications company. Since inception in 1998, the company has led growth in the digital and voice market to become the biggest mobile operator in the Kingdom of Eswatini. The company is currently leading growth opportunities in the data and ICT space. To date, MTN Eswatini has over million subscribers.

The nomination by IPP for the Global Employer of the Year Award: Platinum was initially disclosed by MTN Acting Chief Executive Officer Sibusiso Nhleko during the company’s South African Board of People Practices (SABPP) accreditation celebration held early last month.

The announcement he made was recently confirmed by the release of the awards shortlist by IIP on their website (https://www.investorsinpeople.com/events/awards/). IIP said the Investors in People Awards 2019 had been their biggest and most competitive year to date.

“In some cases, we have had to introduce additional categories by size band. The quality of entries was just so strong, we felt too mean letting the best of the best miss out,” said the award organizers.

For the Employer of the Year: Platinum nomination, MTN Eswatini is under a size band of organizations that have 50-249 people. Making a comment on what makes MTN shines in people management, MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Sibusiso Nhleko said this resulted from the company’s mantra “People Matter.”

“In the two decades that MTN Eswatini has operated in the Kingdom of Eswatini, the company has learnt that people are its greatest assets, thus giving birth to our mantra ‘People Matter’. Therefore, we have prioritized the continuous transformation and improvement of the people agenda within the company. Key to this approach has been our people centric culture, striving for best in class people practices and continuous learning and benchmarking,” he said.

Nhleko said their commitment to the people agenda started a few years ago when they started a journey of benchmarking and seeking accreditation from international bodies.

“Our aim has always been to learn, improve and eventually test ourselves against global standards. We believe this will be critical to make our business a great place to work and achieving our new strategic ambition of building an appealing employer brand in the country,” he said.

As a result, he said in August 2016, MTN Eswatini was Gold Accredited by IPP, which is based in the United Kingdom (UK) making it one of two operations in the MTN Group of companies, to achieve this milestone. And, two years later, MTN Eswatini received Platinum accreditation, a first in the Group and in Africa and part of the only one per cent IIP participating organizations worldwide.

Nhleko said the company remains committed to hold itself to the highest possible human resources standards, put people at the heart of the business, develop future leaders for both the company and the country and embrace innovation and drive a vibrant corporate social investment program.

“All these are critical enablers for our business in the digital age,” he said.
