Prime Minister promotes growth and stability in Eswatini’s sugar industry

Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has engaged with the Eswatini Sugar Association (ESA) Council, alongside the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Trade Manqoba Khumalo, to advance the development of the sugar industry to uphold its stability in the global market and ensure its continued growth for the benefit of all liSwati.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the sugar industry as the largest and most robust sector of the economy, the Prime Minister expressed the government’s pride in its accomplishments and emphasized the importance of fostering further growth and profitability within the sector.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the industry’s stability and resilience, particularly in safeguarding against potential market fluctuations.

The Premier revealed his satisfaction with the industry’s willingness to invest in the production of electricity, noting that the sugar sector already contributes a substantial 17 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity grid.

He affirmed the government’s support for this endeavour, recognizing its potential to enhance the country’s energy efficiency and contribute to sustainable development.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister urged the ESA Council to extend support to local companies seeking to enter the sugar industry, emphasizing the importance of nurturing indigenous businesses and promoting economic empowerment among the liSwati populace.

In turn, the ESA Council sought government assistance in accessing the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) market and expressed their aspirations to explore value addition as part of the nation’s ongoing industrialization drive. However, they emphasized the need to ensure that such efforts do not undermine the core interests of the industry.

The Council also highlighted recent achievements within the sugar sector, including increased representation of women, improved market access, and the growing number of eSwatini businesses benefiting from the industry’s activities.

Assuring the ESA Council of the government’s unwavering support, Prime Minister Russell Dlamini made emphasis on his dedication to supporting the growth and prosperity of the sugar industry. He pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders to address challenges, seize opportunities, and propel the sector towards greater success.
