The Ministry of Agriculture has released important guidance for farmers, urging them to take advantage of recent rainfall and favourable soil moisture conditions by beginning their planting for the season.

Acting Principal Secretary Gugu Shabangu in a statement emphasized that early planting will be crucial in maximizing crop establishment and yields as Eswatini enters a promising planting period.

However, Shabangu noted a supply challenge with the popular SC 719 late-maturing maize variety, which has experienced high demand this season.

Efforts are underway to secure additional SC 719 seed, but supplies may still fall short.

To address this, the Ministry recommends farmers consider alternative late-maturing varieties, such as Lake 707, which is readily available and suited for planting up until the end of November.

For farmers who plan to plant after November, the Ministry advises shifting to medium-maturity maize varieties, such as SC 637, SC 555, Lake 601, CAP 9001, and CAP 9021.

These varieties are better adapted for later planting and should ensure a successful yield given the shorter growth period.

The Ministry reassured farmers that resources and support are available across the country.

Extension officers stationed in all Rural Development Areas (RDAs) are ready to provide personalized guidance on seed selection and crop management.

Additionally, tractors are accessible at RDAs to support farmers with ploughing, a key step in preparing the land.

“The Ministry remains committed to supporting the farming community throughout the planting season.

Extension officers are available at all Rural Development Areas (RDAs) to provide guidance and assistance to farmers as they select and plant their crops.

Additionally, tractors are available at RDAs to support farmers in their ploughing efforts,” Shabangu said in the statement.

“We encourage all farmers to connect with their local extension officers for specific advice on selecting and using the best seed varieties for the season,” said Shabangu.

“The Ministry remains dedicated to providing farmers with the resources and information they need for a productive season.”
