King commissions Butimba

His Majesty King Mswati III on Sunday commissioned the traditional Butimba (hunting expedition) at the Ngabezweni Royal Residence, marking the continuation of one of Eswatini’s long-standing cultural traditions.
The Butimba is a royal-led event where warriors, under the guidance of the King, embark on a hunting expedition within a designated game reserve. The hunt is carried out with strict cultural protocols, and only selected species of game animals are targeted and killed.
The expedition is not merely about hunting but carries deep cultural and symbolic significance. It is a tradition rooted in strengthening unity among the nation’s warriors, fostering discipline, and connecting emaSwati with the ways of their forefathers.
Commissioning the event, His Majesty underscored the importance of cultural preservation and national pride, describing Butimba as a practice that reinforces the values of courage, responsibility, and respect for nature.
“Through Butimba, we are not only reviving an important cultural practice but also teaching future generations the values of togetherness, endurance, and respect for our environment,” His Majesty stated.

The warriors, who will take part in the expedition, are expected to engage in traditional hunting methods under the King’s leadership. According to cultural custodians, the selective hunting of game animals is carefully managed to ensure it does not pose a threat to conservation efforts, while maintaining the authenticity of the age-old practice.
Historians note that Butimba was historically a vital event in the Eswatini nation, serving as both a source of sustenance and a test of bravery and skill for warriors.
Today, it stands as a cultural symbol that preserves heritage while adapting to modern conservation standards.
The commissioning ceremony at Ngabezweni was accompanied by traditional songs and dances, with hundreds of emaSwati in attendance to witness the event.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as warriors prepared to join the King on the expedition.
This year’s Butimba precedes other significant cultural ceremonies such as the Umhlanga Reed Dance, reaffirming Eswatini’s commitment to safeguarding its traditions while uniting the nation through shared heritage.
