ANTANANARIVO, MADAGASCAR – His Majesty King Mswati III has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, commonly known as the Troika.

This is a regional body tasked with promoting peace and security in Southern Africa.

The election took place during the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government yesterday. His Majesty will deputise His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi, who was elected Chairperson for the 2025–2026 term.

The King is set to assume the Chairmanship for the 2026–2027 term.

In accepting the role, His Majesty expressed gratitude to SADC leaders for their confidence in him and the Kingdom of Eswatini. He pledged to work diligently to uphold the Troika’s principles and promote peace across the region.

Notably, this appointment occurred in Madagascar, where His Majesty previously played a pivotal role as Chairperson of the Troika from 2010 to 2011.

During that period, the organ initiated Thea roadmap that led to a peaceful resolution to the political conflict that began in 2009 with the ousting of then-President Marc Ravalomanana.
