King summons warriors for Butimba

His Majesty King Mswati III has called on the nation’s warriors to participate in Butimba, the traditional royal hunt.
Through Indvuna Bahlole Ndzimandze, the King instructed all warriors to gather at Ludzidzini Royal Residence this coming Saturday.
The warriors have been directed to arrive fully prepared and equipped with the necessary tools.
The announcement has set preparations in motion across the country, as regiments prepare to respond to the royal command. The gathering at Ludzidzini is expected to draw warriors from all four regions of Eswatini.
Worth mentioning is that, Butimba is one of Eswatini’s oldest cultural traditions. Historically, it was a royal expedition led by the King and his regiments to hunt game.
Beyond its practical purpose, Butimba functioned as a unifying exercise, reinforcing loyalty to the monarch and strengthening military preparedness among the warriors.
The event also carried social and cultural significance, bringing together men from across the country in a display of unity, discipline, and service to the crown. It was seen as both a hunt and a symbolic reaffirmation of the bond between the King and his subjects.
Over the years, Butimba has remained part of the country’s cultural calendar, preserving a practice passed down through generations. It is one of several national gatherings where regiments, under the leadership of traditional authorities, converge at the King’s command.
In his announcement, Indvuna Bahlole Ndzimandze emphasized the importance of readiness. Warriors were reminded to bring the necessary tools, which traditionally include hunting weapons, shields, and other items required for participation.
“Regional chiefs and indvunas are expected to oversee the mobilization of regiments in their areas, ensuring that the warriors report to Ludzidzini on time. Such mobilizations are coordinated through the established traditional structures, reflecting the continued role of chieftaincies in upholding national customs,” said Indvuna during the announcement.
Meanwhile the atmosphere ahead of Saturday’s gathering is one of anticipation, as the event will be the first Butimba in recent years to convene such a large assembly. Warriors are expected to travel in groups, arriving at the royal residence in full regimental attire.

The convening of Butimba highlights the enduring importance of cultural traditions in Eswatini’s national identity. By summoning the regiments, His Majesty reinforces the role of cultural institutions in uniting the country under shared values and practices.
The hunt itself, while steeped in history, symbolizes broader themes of discipline, solidarity, and respect for tradition. It is not only a gathering of warriors but also a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being part of the regiments.
For many young men, participation in Butimba is a way of connecting with their heritage and gaining recognition within their communities. For elders, it is an opportunity to pass down knowledge and customs to the younger generation.
On Saturday, all eyes will turn to Ludzidzini Royal Residence as warriors converge for the royal command. The gathering will mark another chapter in the continuation of Eswatini’s cultural traditions, with Butimba reaffirming its place as a central feature of the nation’s heritage.
The King’s directive, delivered through Indvuna Bahlole Ndzimandze, has set the tone for what is expected to be a significant national event, uniting regiments in service to the crown and in celebration of a practice that has endured through centuries
