His Majesty King Mswati III today joined scores of warriors at Hlane Game Reserve for the annual Butimba hunting expedition, a traditional event that continues to hold deep cultural significance in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
The hunting expedition, commonly known as Butimba, is a longstanding Swazi tradition where the King, accompanied by warriors from across the country, embarks on a collective hunt within designated game reserves.
The practice is not only a cultural gathering but also a reaffirmation of unity, strength, and discipline among the nation’s warriors.
At Hlane, large groups of warriors clad in their traditional regalia arrived early to take part in the hunt. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and chants of cultural pride as the men prepared for the day’s activities.
According to royal aides, the King himself led the warriors into the reserve, symbolizing both leadership and continuity of tradition.
The hunt itself is carefully managed in partnership with game reserve authorities. Only selected animals are targeted during Butimba, ensuring that the practice remains sustainable and in line with conservation principles.
The expedition is not about mass hunting, but about the symbolism of the King and his warriors working together in pursuit of a common goal.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, cultural experts highlighted that Butimba is not merely a hunting trip, but a reflection of values such as teamwork, respect for leadership, and preservation of heritage.
“This is a unifying activity for the nation. The King, by taking part, demonstrates his closeness to his people and his role as custodian of tradition,” one cultural commentator explained.
As the hunt progressed, warriors were seen moving in formation through the savannah grasslands of Hlane, maintaining strict discipline and order under the King’s watchful leadership.
The spectacle drew attention not only from participants but also from members of the public who gathered near the reserve to witness the historic event.
The Butimba hunting expedition remains one of the highlights of Eswatini’s cultural calendar, standing alongside other significant ceremonies such as Incwala and Umhlanga.
It serves as a reminder of the country’s rich traditions, which continue to be observed and cherished even in a modern era.
With His Majesty leading from the front, today’s event at Hlane underscored the enduring relevance of Butimba in fostering unity, celebrating culture, and preserving the identity of the Swazi nation.
