Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security between the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Zambia
LOBAMBA: In a significant move towards enhancing regional peace and security, the Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Zambia have officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security. The signing ceremony was held today, marking a pivotal moment in the shared commitment of both nations to collaborate on defense and security initiatives.
The MoU aims to strengthen joint efforts in addressing various defense and security challenges, while facilitating the exchange of critical information and expertise between the two countries. Through this partnership, Eswatini and Zambia will be better equipped to tackle pressing security issues, including cross-border crimes and illegal migration, thus contributing to broader regional peace and stability.

During the ceremony, the Acting Minister of the Ministry of Defence and Security, Senator Pholile Shakantu, emphasized that this Commission reflects His Majesty King Mswati III’s unwavering commitment to enhancing relationships in key strategic areas. She stated, “This partnership is grounded in the fundamental principles enshrined i
n the Charters of the United Nations and the African Union, as well as the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which underscore the importance of respecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.”

Echoing her sentiments, the Honourable Ambrose Lwinji Lufuma, Minister of Defence for Zambia, highlighted the vital connection between peace and development, quoting President Hakainde Hichilema: “Instability anywhere on the continent is instability everywhere.” He emphasized that peace is not just an end in itself but the very foundation upon which development is built. Minister Lufuma reaffirmed Zambia’s confidence in the Kingdom of Eswatini and reiterated that expanding relations across various fields remains a top priority for his government.

The roots of this collaboration extend back to earlier engagements and discussions between both nations, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to working together in pursuit of shared goals.
As both countries move forward under this new framework, they aim to strengthen ties, enhance security cooperation, and ultimately foster a stable and prosperous environment for their citizens.
