Street market fair a boost for local entrepreneurs

Local businesses are gearing up for a major economic opportunity as the highly anticipated Fair is set to take place as a street market in the heart of Mbabane.
The event, scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2025, will transform Dr. Sishayi Road into a vibrant marketplace, giving 139 local business owners a platform to showcase their products. The road will be closed from the Swazi Plaza exit to the Bus rank exit to accommodate the fair.
The announcement was made following a site tour led by Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe, which culminated in a media briefing at Kagogo Startups Store at the Mall.
A Peculiar People’s Person Chairman, Melusi Zox Dlamini, described the fair as a turning point for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), emphasizing the economic impact it will have.
“This is more than just an exhibition; it’s an opportunity for local businesses to connect directly with consumers in a high-traffic area. The street market format will create an interactive experience that encourages visibility, sales, and networking,” Dlamini stated.
He noted that positioning the fair in the heart of Mbabane’s Central Business District (CBD) was a strategic decision aimed at maximizing foot traffic and ensuring that businesses gain the exposure they need.
“The CBD is the economic hub of the capital, and by bringing the fair here, we are integrating local businesses into the daily activities of the city. This will help them establish stronger relationships with customers and investors,” he added.
The concept of street markets has been widely embraced in other cities worldwide to support local economies. Dlamini believes that this fair will serve as a model for future business initiatives in Eswatini.

“Many businesses struggle with high rental costs, limited marketing budgets, and reduced consumer spending. This fair removes those barriers, allowing vendors to operate in a prime location without the overhead costs,” he explained.
He further highlighted that the event aligns with broader efforts to empower entrepreneurs and create a culture of buying locally.
“Our goal is to ensure that local businesses thrive and that consumers see the value in supporting homegrown brands. This fair is a step towards building a more sustainable and inclusive economy,” Dlamini said.
Beyond business transactions, the fair is expected to bring a festive atmosphere to the city, with entertainment, food stalls, and interactive activities planned for the day. Dlamini encouraged members of the public to attend and support the exhibitors.
“This is an opportunity to discover unique products, engage with passionate entrepreneurs, and contribute to the growth of our economy. We urge the public to come out in numbers and make this event a success,” he concluded.
