His Majesty King Mswati III has said established SADC structures will lead efforts to find a solution to Madagascar’s political challenges as Eswatini takes charge of the regional security organ.
The King was responding to a question from Times of Eswatini reporter Siphosethu Dlamini while updating the nation on his recent engagements in South Africa and Malaysia.
Dlamini asked His Majesty about Madagascar, noting that the King had previously chaired the SADC Organ Troika during 2010 and 2011, when the island nation was also experiencing political instability.
The reporter further asked how the King intended to approach the situation now that Eswatini has again assumed leadership of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
In response, His Majesty said the different structures within the SADC Organ would be tasked with finding a solution to the situation.
The King’s response places the Madagascar matter within the established SADC mechanisms, rather than making it the responsibility of the Chairperson alone.
Eswatini assumed the Chairpersonship of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation during the 46th SADC Heads of State and Government Summit held in Durban, South Africa.
The Organ is responsible for promoting peace, security and stability in the region, with the Organ Troika providing political leadership.
Other structures supporting the Organ include the Ministerial Committee of the Organ, Inter-State Politics and Diplomacy Committee, Inter-State Defence and Security Committee, Panel of Elders and Mediation Reference Group.
Madagascar has previously been the subject of SADC intervention, with the regional bloc using diplomatic and mediation efforts to support dialogue and constitutional governance.
The issue therefore presents a familiar challenge for His Majesty, who has previous experience leading the regional security organ during a period when Madagascar was also dealing with political instability.
The Madagascar issue was raised as the King outlined Eswatini’s new regional responsibilities following the Durban summit.
His Majesty expressed appreciation for Eswatini’s elevation to the leadership of the SADC security organ and highlighted the country’s contribution towards regional peace, security and stability.
The King also reflected on his official visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, highlighting engagements and opportunities that could contribute to Eswatini’s development.
During his address, His Majesty congratulated University of Eswatini student Vuyelwa Karabo Simelane after she emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 SADC Tertiary Institution Essay Competition.
Simelane received the top prize of US$2,000, bringing recognition to Eswatini through her achievement at regional level.
The King also blessed the thousands of iMbali gathered at Ludzidzini Royal Residence ahead of the 2026 Umhlanga Reed Dance.
His Majesty wished the maidens a safe journey as they prepare to cut reeds, while encouraging them to uphold the values and traditions associated with the annual cultural event.
