The Kingdom of Eswatini has been entrusted with a critical role in safeguarding democratic values within the Southern African region, following the appointment of Themba N. Masuku, former Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), as Head of Mission for the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to the Republic of Malawi.

The appointment was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Pholile Shakantu, who announced that the decision was made by His Majesty King Mswati III, in his capacity as the Incoming Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (TROIKA).

“It has pleased His Majesty King Mswati III to appoint Themba Masuku as the Head of Mission for the SADC Electoral Observation Mission to the Republic of Malawi, for its General Elections scheduled for 16 September 2025,” Minister Shakantu said.

The SADC Electoral Observation Mission will play a vital role in ensuring that Malawi’s upcoming general elections are conducted in line with the region’s agreed principles.

“Masuku will lead a delegation tasked with ensuring that Malawi’s electoral process adheres to the highest standards of transparency, credibility, and fairness,” said Shakantu.

“This is in alignment with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, which remain central to the community’s mission of promoting good governance and political stability.”

She added that the appointment “underscores Eswatini’s steadfast commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, peace, and regional integration within the SADC framework.”

Masuku is no stranger to leadership and governance. Having served the Kingdom of Eswatini in various senior roles, including as DPM, his background in diplomacy, public administration, and policymaking makes him uniquely suited for this assignment.

“Masuku’s extensive experience in governance and diplomacy positions him well to guide the SEOM in fulfilling its mandate during this pivotal electoral process in Malawi. We are confident that under his leadership, the mission will contribute to a credible electoral outcome that reflects the will of the Malawian people,” she said.

As a founding member of SADC, Eswatini has consistently played a part in promoting unity and peace across the region. This latest appointment, according to Minister Shakantu, reaffirms the Kingdom’s leadership role in supporting collective security and democratic governance.

“The Kingdom of Eswatini remains resolute in its support for the regional body’s mission to promote political stability, democratic governance, and sustainable development throughout Southern Africa,” she stated.

She further noted that His Majesty’s appointment of Masuku reflects “a clear demonstration of Eswatini’s readiness to take up leadership responsibilities in advancing regional peace and cooperation.”

Minister Shakantu concluded by emphasising that the appointment was also symbolic of His Majesty King Mswati III’s personal dedication to fostering regional integration and democratic values.

“This appointment reaffirms His Majesty King Mswati III’s dedication to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing Eswatini’s leadership in multilateral initiatives that foster unity, democratic values, and sustainable development throughout the Southern African region,” Shakantu added.
