Mamelodi Sundowns are currently third in the Betway Premiership League with 11 points from five games after drawing twice and winning three times.

Though many people are starting to doubt the defending league champions, Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has said that people should not count Sundowns out of the title race.

In an exclusive interview with Eswatini Daily News the former Cape Town City coach whose club is currently sitting on top of the league log with 13 points said that 11 points from five games is a great start for any team wanting to win the league at the end of the season.

“I always put pressure on myself. Like I said I demand a lot from myself I demand a lot from my team. For me pressure is important because pressure makes you more focused.

Pressure makes you want to fight more if you want. I want to achieve more. But as you said its still early days you know.

Do I belive we can win the league? I think its going to be a massive challenge because I still think Mamelodi Sundowns, everybody is talking about them having started badly. But they have got 11 points from five games.

That’s still a very very good start. That’s still league winning points. I think people are already putting them out of the equation way too early,” Tinkler told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile the former Bafana Bafana midfielder said that their best finish in the lesgue this season could be in the top three if they can’t win the title.

“Like I said in the beginning of the season the objective is to try and finish in that top three position. What we want t9 achieve and achieve as a club is to keep breaking club records. We have broken a number of club records last season since my arrival.

So if we can continue doing that. Last season we got 47 points can we try and get 50 points this season? That would mean we are moving in the right direction. Its all about going forward and not going backwards,” Tinkler observed.

The coach added that now they have the challenge of repeating what they have done in the opening five games to continue the momentum.

“I think it has been a team effort and everybody has been applying themselves in the correct manner and that’s obviously what I would like the team to continue to do you know.

Continue applying ourselves in the way we have applied ourselves in the five matches that we have played from August. And the now the problem is we have to do another cycle of five like what we have just done if we want to win the league and that is going to be a challenge, ” Tinkler added.

Last season in their quest to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup Babina Noko ended on forth position which gave Stellenbosch FC another chance to compete in the tournament where they finished in the semifinals last season.
