Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has taken a firm stance on the rising incidence of suicides in Eswatini, declaring it a pressing national concern that requires immediate attention and collective action.

His remarks came during a recent session in Parliament, where he addressed the Senate on the 1st Quarter Performance Report for the Prime Minister’s Office.

The discussion was ignited by Senator Chief Ngangabani, who expressed his condolences to the Prime Minister regarding the tragic suicides of two police officers, highlighting the urgent need for a societal response to this troubling trend.

In his address, the Prime Minister underscored the broader implications of suicide, stating that the issue transcends the police force and has escalated into a national crisis affecting families and communities across Eswatini.

He emphasised the importance of dialogue and support, urging emaSwati to remain resilient in the face of life’s challenges.

The Prime Minister’s acknowledgement of the gravity of the situation reflects a growing awareness within government circles regarding mental health issues.

“If you recall, we addressed this matter at length last year, including when we were in Lobamba,” Dlamini remarked, indicating that the government has previously engaged in discussions about mental health but recognises that more needs to be done.

He expressed his heartfelt condolences not only to the families of the deceased officers but to the nation, recognising the collective grief that accompanies such losses.

Dlamini’s comments resonate deeply in a society where mental health issues are often stigmatised, and seeking help can be viewed as a sign of weakness.

He implored citizens to prioritise their lives above all else, stating, “I want to also say, no matter the problem you face in life and no matter how embarrassing you feel it is to you, it is not more important than your life.”
